After watching the first trailer for Wicked Part 1, fans have pointed out a major inconsistency between the film and musical.
Acting as a prequel to the classic film The Wizard of Oz,Wicked’s two part story will follow witches Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch)as they take drastically different paths in life.
Though fans were excited to watch the first trailer for the movie during the Super Bowl, many have started to point out a glaring inconsistency from the musical to the film.
Wicked fans confused on Dorothy’s inclusion
In the film’s first trailer, fans can see Dorothy and her gang consisting of the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion as they go to speak to the great Wizard of Oz.
However, manyWicked fans quickly took to social media to express their utter confusionon why Dorothy would be included in the film at all.
Though Dorothy is the center star of The Wizard of Oz, she is not mentioned at all in the musical, though she is alluded to in the song ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’ and her house falling on Elphaba’s sister is shown – but she herself never appears on stage.

Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, has made it clear thatcomparing the movie and stage play is like comparing “apples to oranges,”so it’s not too surprising that the trailer would already highlight such a major departure from the Broadway storyline.
Having Dorothy play a bigger role in the film is a great touchstone for those fans who have never seen the musical and also offers another way for Elphaba to be humanized as she dives deeper into her villainous ways.
