A leak of code found in the Meta Quest iOS app suggests that the Apple Vision Pro ‘killer app’ might also make its way to Meta Quest.
Even before the official launch of theVision Pro,Applewas pushing its 3D video system to the next level of immersion. Referred to asSpatial Video, the system used an open standard called MV-HEVC and boasted some interesting features, such as backward compatibility with 2D ‘flat’ devices, the ability to place subtitles within the video, and smaller file sizes. Now it seems that Meta is embracing Spatial Video, according to some text strings found within Meta’s iOS app.
A leaker on Twitter/X named M1Astra discovered several code strings within the iOS version of theMeta Questapp. These strings suggested that Meta could be in the process of making the Meta Quest headsets compatible with Spatial Video, and even providing the means for users to capture their own Spatial Videos.

The strings uncovered within the app included text such as “Enable spatial video in your camera settings.” and “Immerse yourself in your favorite memories by uploading videos on the Meta Quest App.” as well as more blatant references such as “Upload spatial video.” and “Spatial video ready.”

Spatial Videos are currently only able to be captured using aniPhone 15, though athird-party developerhas previously created an app that could convert them into a format that can be viewed on non-Apple headsets such as the Meta Quest. If the leak is accurate, it suggests that this functionality could soon be available natively on Meta Quest headsets.It is currently unknown when or if this functionality will come to the Meta Quest app. There is also no indication of if there are plans to allow the capture of Spatial Video using non-Apple devices.
